The Vanishing

America's oldest unsolved mystery

In 1587, more than a hundred English colonists landed on Roanoke Island. Three years later, a relief ship found the settlement empty. No bodies, no struggle, one word carved into a post: CROATOAN.

Four hundred years on, no one knows what became of them. Roanoke does not hand you the answer. It hands you the shore they landed on.

The colony disappeared. The question never did.
